Slovenia to Austria

Image
Friday 30th August With a black sack containing all our wet clothing from yesterday sitting in our shower cubicle, we said a sad/happy good-bye to sLOVEnia (this logo appears on lots of things), having really enjoyed our travelling around this friendly and clean country for the last 19 days.  But we are looking forward to more adventures as we journey home - we still have 12 days more. As we passed through Bled, we stopped for some shopping at Mercator and a quick geocache at the Information Centre opposite.  The clue was the red room - as you can see we found it - and that cardboard tube was down between the tree stumps, containing the largest log book ever! We did buy a couple of the Bled speciality cakes to eat later in the day.   We were soon in Austria again and settled for a couple of days at a site in Malta, a village in the Maltatal, the Malta valley.  First job - give the rain-washed clothes a proper wash and get them out to dry. Saturday 31s...

Another day at the lake

Thursday 29th August Today started really well.  We bought rolls from the little wooden chalet bakery at the campsite, made 2 x 2 picnic lunches, put the kettle on, walked to the bus stop to meet Anne and Chris Teager off the bus from Bled, came back for a coffee sitting outside the van, all walked to the car park outside the site for the free bus to the lake.  All very similar to the day Natalie and David came - so far. We had decided to walk around the lake as far as we wanted, have our picnic on a bench, have a paddle in the lovely clear water, find a couple of geocaches and turn round when we felt we'd gone far enough. Our picnic, lunch and paddle stop.   All was going so well and we were so busy chatting, we hadn't really noticed the clouds - of course we'd heard the rumbles, but that, we assured Anne and Chris was normal around here.  People were out on the boat trip, others were swimming, others paddle boarding - some were even pretty well stri...

Savica Slap - Mount Vogel

Image
Tuesday 27th August Today we caught the bus to Savica where we had a drink at this cafe before the climb up to the Savica waterfall (slap). The path was up hundreds of steps - took us about 40 minutes.  Well worth the climb to see the waterfall.  A lot of the Savica river is through the rocks in tunnels - some discovered, some not.  Here it appears out of the rock face  and falls into a shimmering pool  and continues down over the rocks.  Back down at base camp, we decided to carry on walking the path down to Ukanc village and the bus stop at the western end of the lake.  We passed some beautiful chalet houses on the way.  And over the river again just before it reaches the Lake Bohinj. Wednesday 28th August We love the Slovenian buses.  They run more or less on time and are very cheap.  Today we caught the same bus as yesterday, but got of at the road leading to the cable car up to Vogel.  It was fair...

Day at Bohinjsko Jezero

Image
Monday 26th August Today, Natalie and David came on the bus to us at Bohinjska Bistrica.  After a coffee at our campsite, we all caught the free bus to Lake Bonhinj. Our first view of the lake.  The water is crystal clear.  David was fascinated by the fish.  So then he ate one! This was our slightly belated birthday celebration for him.  But we all enjoyed our lunch. Our restaurant from the path by the lake.  It's been a very atmospheric day today, with hazy clouds, some sunshine and also some rumbles around the mountains. The little church of St. John the Baptist is well worth a visit - we don't remember having to pay to go in when we were here 3 years ago!   Spot the error on the notice board! The frescoes are so well preserved.  And the views from the bell tower, amazing.  Mount Triglav, the highest in Slovenia.  All Slovenians have to climb it at least once in their lifetime.
