St. Omer and Licques

Image
Tuesday 10th September Some more motorway on a lovely sunny morning brought us to St. Omer.  We parked as usual at the Carrefour supermarket on the edge of town and walked into the centre. Then lunch at Le Cygne.  (This is becoming quite a habit on our way home from our trips.) I promised photos and here they are: Starters - Ann's is a cold cauliflower risotto.  Sounds rather strange, but delicious.  John's is beef tartare.  Mains - Ann's is confit of duck with lots small pieces of interesting vegetables.  John's is pork with some of the same additions and a different one. Desserts - Ann's is an 'idee du jour', so I didn't really know what was coming.  Inside was part cake, part chocolatey ice cream with a brittle covering (possibly chocolate) and flakes of coconut on top.   John's is Mousse a chocolat with more chocolate on top.  It really is worth getting here a day early to be able to visit Le Cygne! Then we c...

Bonzee - Banteux

Image
Sunday 8th September So much for exploring the village of Ottrott this morning - it was rain stop play!  We really didn't fancy getting wet so decided to move on.  The village wouldn't be so pretty without sunshine anyway. This awful photo is our France Passion farm/vineyard as we are leaving this morning! We covered quite a few miles with on and off rainy periods but landed in the dry at an unusual campsite not far off the A4 autoroute east of Verdun and between the villages of Fresnes-en-Woevre and Bonzee.  The lake is in the centre of a park open to the public, with various recreational areas, including the Ste. Marguerite camping. It was the largest, emptiest site we've been to!  It's so difficult to choose a pitch when there are so many to choose from. We settled on the biggest!  Monday 9th September This morning's blue sky makes the site look even more attractive.  I'm standing under a huge tree.  A lot more driving this mornin...

Titisee - Oberried - Ottrott (France)

Image
Friday 6th September A quick nip into the Edeka supermarket down the hill from the camperstop at Uberlingen for some rolls and very tasty looking pastries, then a bit more moving on westwards into the Black Forest.  As we were passing through Titisee, we decided to pay our third visit to this delightful place for a few hours.  It is very touristy, with 90% of the shops selling pricey souvenirs like cuckoo clocks starting at 400€, but worth the visit to the Christmas shop and a wander beside the lake.  We never seem to get warm weather here, but it is pretty high up. We knew about this animated clock on the side wall of a jewellers shop, so were here at a perfect time.  The 'people' go round and round to a pretty little tune!  From Titisee we drove a little further to Kirnermartes Hof campsite at Oberried - a terraced site which is part of a farm that's on the other side of the lane. Saturday 7th September These are some of our friendly n...

Isny - Uberlingen

Image
Wednesday 4th September Travelling a bit further west we stayed on minor roads to appreciate the Bavarian scenery.  Back at the Austrian campsite at Malta, our neighbours told us that they lived in the town of Isny not far from Lake Constance, and that it had a campsite in the forest.  So we decided to aim for that today.  It has a pretty little lake too.  After lunch and a relax in the sunshine, we walked down into the town of Isny.  Lots of interesting features in a very clean and pleasant place.  They even have a knitted fountain!  This small lake is in the town too. Thursday 5th September Moving on again this morning - again on a scenic route - we came to Bodensee (or Lake Constance).  We chose to come to Uberlingen on recommendation from friend, Marilyn.  Despite it being a chilly (we put on long trousers for the first time!) and cloudy day, the lake was beautiful this afternoon to walk along the prom, admire...

Terrassen-Camping am Rottenbuch

Image
Tuesday 3rd September We've stumbled on yet another delightful campsite and village.  Bavaria is just so lovely. Campsite reception. A walk through the village of Rottenbuch.  (Appropriate place to be - my back has been rather rotten today!) The post office has its own courtyard and fountain.    The Rathaus. The clock tower, with church to the right of it behind tree.   Probably the most highly decorated church of them all - built in the 1700s - and in a very small village with just one pub and 2 bakery/cafes. The pulpit - so much to look at, that we wonder if the sermon is listened to(!)  The organ loft/musicians/sound gallery.  No organ there now, but we saw pictures of when it was.  Then a walk steeply down through the forest  to the River Ammer and back.  Back up to the village.  This is the gateway through it.  While having our lunch on a seat the other side of the arch, we saw a few very lar...
